welcome to module one of our V-Ray Next for 3ds Max lighting series. My name is Brian Bradley and I’m really looking forward to working through the series of V-Ray lighting courses that we have lined up for you. In this particular module, after giving ourselves a good grounding regarding the basics of how light actually behaves in the real world, we’re going to be focusing our attention on the V-Ray light itself inside of Max, sometimes called the plane or rectangle light in other versions of the application.

Taking a good look at the controls that are made available in its various operating modes, these being the plane, dome, sphere, mesh, and disc. By the time we get to the final chapter then, we should be ready to take a look at putting everything that we’ve learned during the course into practice as we present the challenge of working through some simple and yet still important lighting exercises, after which I will quickly show you the challenge solution that I opted for. Do keep in mind though that what I will show is just my particular quick solution to the challenge that has been set and not the correct way that it should have been done or anything like that. Lighting as with any art form, and it is an art form, is very much subjective. And so a final result that pleases one person may not necessarily appeal to another.

What we are interested in with this course then is giving ourselves the technical ability to light so that we can then practice the craft or art in order to produce the results that we want or need. As there is plenty for us to get our teeth into then, let’s get started with lighting in V-Ray Next for 3ds Max, module one.
